Tamilnadu Samacheer Kalvi 8th Maths Solutions Term 1 Chapter 4 Geometry Ex 4.1

Question 1.
From the figure given, prove that ∆ABC ~ ∆DEF.
Samacheer Kalvi 8th Maths Term 1 Chapter 4 Geometry Ex 4.1 1
Solution:
From the ∆ABC,
AB = AC
It is an isosceles triangle
Angles opposite to equal sides are equal
∴ ∠B = ∠C = 65°
∴ ∠B + ∠C = 65° + 65°
= 130°
We know that .sum of three angles is a triangle = 180°
∠A + ∠B + ∠C = 180°
∠A + 130° = 180°
∠A = 180°-130°
∠A = 50°
From ∆DEF, ∠D = 50°
∴ Sum of Remaining angles = 180° – 50° = 130°
DE = FD
∴ ∠D = ∠F
From ∆ABC and ∆DEF
Samacheer Kalvi 8th Maths Term 1 Chapter 4 Geometry Ex 4.1 2
∠A = ∠D = 50°
∠B = ∠E = 65°
∠C = ∠F = 65°
∴ By AAA criteria ∆DEF ~ ∆ABC

Question 4.
In the given figure, if ∆EAT ~ ∆BUN find the measure of all angles.
Samacheer Kalvi 8th Maths Term 1 Chapter 4 Geometry Ex 4.1 11
Solution:
Given ∆EAT ≡ ∆BUN
∴ Corresponding angles are equal
∴ ∠E = ∠B ..(1)
∠A = ∠U ..(2)
∠T = ∠N ..(3)
∠E = x°
∠A = 2x°
Sum of three angles of a triangle = 180°
In ∆EAT, x + 2x + ∠T = 180°
∠T = 180° – (x° + 2x° )
∠T = 180°- 3x° …(4)
Also in ∆BUN
(x + 40)° + + ∠U = 180°
x + 40° + x + ∠U = 180°
2x° + 40° + ∠U = 180°
∠U = 180° – 2x – 40°
= 140° – 2x°
Now by (2)
∠A = ∠U
2x = 140° – 2x
2x + 2x = 140°
4x = 140°
Samacheer Kalvi 8th Maths Term 1 Chapter 4 Geometry Ex 4.1 12
∠A = 2x° = 2 × 35° = 70°
∠N = x + 40°
= 35° + 40° = 75°
∴ ∠T = ∠N = 75°
∠E = ∠B = 35°
∠A = ∠U = 70°

Long Answers [5 Marks]

Question 1.
Factorize
(i) x2 + 2xy + y2 – a2 + 2ab – b2
(ii) 9 – a6 + 2a3 – b6
Solution:
(i) x2 + 2xy + y2 – a2 + 2ab – b2.
= (x2 + 2xy + y2) – (a2 – 2ab + b2)
= (x + y)2 – (a – b)2
= {(x + y) + (a – b)} {(x + y) – (a – b)}
= (x + y + a – b) (x + y – a + b)

(ii) a – a6 + 2a3b3 – b6
= 9 – (a6 – 2a3b3 + b6)
= 32 -{(a3)2 – 2 × a3 × b3 + (b3)2}
= 32 – (a3 – 63)2
= {3 + (a3 – b3)} {3 – (a3 – b3)}
= (3 + a3 – b3) (3 – a3 + b3)
= (a3 – b3 + 1){-a3 + b3 + 3)

Question 2.
Factorize
(i) 100 (x + y )2 – 81 (a + b)2
(ii)(x + 1)2 – (x – 2)2
Solution:
(i) 100 (x + y)2 – 81 (a + b)2
= {10 (x + y)}2 – {(a (a + b)}2
= {10 (x + y) + 9 (a + b)}
{10 (x + y) – 9(a + b)}
= (10x + 10y + 9a – 9b)}
(10x + 10y – 9a – 9b)

(ii) (x – 1)2 – (x – 2)2
= {(x – 1 +(x – 2)}
{(x – 1) – (x – 2)}
= (2x – 3) – (x – 1 – x + 2)
= (2x – 3) × 1 = 2x – 3

Question 9.
Factorise: 16p4 – 1
Solution:
16p4 – 1 = 24p4 – 1 = (22)2(p2)2 – 12
Comparing with a2 – b2 = (a + b)(a – b) where a = 22p2 and b = 1
∴ (22p2)2 – 12 = (22p2 + 1) (22p2 – 1) = (4p2 + 1) (4p2 – 1)
∴ 16p4 – 1 = (4p2 + 1)(4p2 – 1)(4p2 + 1)(22p2 – 12)
= (4p2 + 1) [(2p)2– 12] = (4p2 + 1) (2p + 1)(2p – 1)
[∵ using a2 – b2 = (a + b) (a – b)]
∴ 16p4 – 1 = (4psup>2 + 1)(2p + 1)(2p – 1)

This is of the form a3 – b3 with a = x2, b = 4y
a3 – b3 = (a – b)(a2 + ab + b2)
(x2)3 – (4y)3 = (x2 – 4y) [(x2)2 + (x2)(4y) + (4y)2]
= (x2 – 4y) [x4 + 4x2y + 16y2]
∴ x6 – 64y3 = (x2 – 4y) [x4 + 4x2y + 16y2]

Question 13.
A fruit vendor bought some mangoes of which 10% were rotten. He sold 33 \(\frac{1}{3}\)% of the rest. Find the total number of mangoes bought by him initially, if he still has 240 mangoes with him.
Samacheer Kalvi 8th Maths Solutions Term 2 Chapter 1 Life Mathematics Ex 1.1 15
Solution:
Let the number of mangoes bought by fruit seller initially be x.
Given that 10% of mangoes were rotten
∴ Number of rotten mangoes = \(\frac{10}{100}\) × x
Number of good mangoes = x – no. of rotten mangoes
= x – \(\frac{10}{100}\)x = \(\frac{100x-10x}{100}\) = \(\frac{90}{100}\)x …(1)
Number of mangoes sold = 33\(\frac{1}{3}\)% of good mangoes = \(\frac{100}{3}\)%
∴ Mangoes sold = \(\frac{100}{3}\) x \(\frac{90}{100}\)x × \(\frac{1}{100}\) = \(\frac{30}{100}\)x
Number of mangoes remaining = No. of good mangoes – No. of mangoes sold

Question 14.
A student gets 31% marks in an examination but fails by 12 marks. If the pass percentage is 35%, find the maximum marks of the examination.
Solution:
Let the maximum marks in the exam be ‘x’. Pass percentage is given as 35%
∴ Pass mark = \(\frac{35}{100}\) × x = \(\frac{35}{100}\)x
Student gets 31 % marks = \(\frac{31}{100}\) × x = \(\frac{31}{100}\)x
But student fails by 12 marks → meaning his mark is 12 less than pass mark.
∴ \(\frac{31}{100}\)x = \(\frac{35}{100}\)x – 12
∴ \(\frac{35}{100}\)x – \(\frac{31}{100}\)x = 12
∴ \(\frac{35x-31x}{100}\) = 12 ⇒ \(\frac{4x}{100}\) = 12
∴ \(\frac{12×100}{4}\) = 300

Question 15.
The ratio of boys and girls in a class is 5:3. If 16% of boys and 8% of girls failed in an examination, then find the percentage of passed students.
Solution:
Let number of boys be ‘6’ and number of girls be ‘g’
Ratio of boys and girls is given as 5:3
b:g = 5:3 ⇒ \(\frac{b}{g}\) = \(\frac{5}{3}\) …..(A)
Failure in boys = 16% = \(\frac{16}{100}\) x b = \(\frac{16b}{100}\)
Failure in girls = 8% = \(\frac{8}{100}\) x g = \(\frac{8g}{100}\)
Pass in boys = 100 – 16% = 84% \(\frac{84}{100}\)b …..(1)
Pass in girls = 100 – 8% = 92% = \(\frac{92}{100}\)g
From A, we have \(\frac{b}{g}\) = \(\frac{5}{3}\), = adding 1 on both sides, we get
\(\frac{b}{g}\) + 1 = \(\frac{5}{3}\) + 1
\(\frac{b+g}{g}\) = \(\frac{5+3}{3}\) = \(\frac{8}{3}\)
∴ g = \(\frac{3}{8}\)(b + g)
Similarly b = \(\frac{5}{8}\)(b + g)
Total pass = Pass in girls + Pass in boys
= (1) + (2) = \(\frac{84}{100}\)b + \(\frac{92}{100}\)g
